As we grow up, we realize it becomes less important to have a ton of friends, and more important to have real ones.

A True Friend

We’ve all had those crazy, fun sleepovers with our close friends; where we laugh all night, tell funny stories, come up with new inside jokes, and make memories that will last forever.

But what if those same friends, the ones you would trust with all your secrets, turn around and gossip about you behind your back the very next day?

Then you find out you have to get glasses. You tell all of your friends and you all laugh about it and say how geeky you’ll look; which you think that you’re all joking about.

Then you show up in your new glasses and they start avoiding you.
You don’t notice it at first because they say that they have homework, family in town, or that they’re sick.

But then somebody slips up and you find out that they’ve been lying to you.

You’re crushed.
You feel abandoned, alone, and heartbroken.
These were supposed to be your best friends.

How are you supposed to trust other girls again?

Let me tell you right now.
People, whether they be girls or boys, who treat you like this, don’t deserve your friendship or your time.

A true friend is like a diary.

They record all of your best times, keep all of your craziest secrets, and share the sweetest of memories with you. They share in your delight when you find out your crush likes you. They share in your sadness when a close family member dies. They sit with you while you cry, comforting you like no one else can; and then they help you carry on through to the happy times again. They’re your friend while you’re popular and wouldn’t even think of leaving your side when everybody else does. When your heart gets broken and left in pieces on the ground, they come and pick it up and put it back together again. They value your trust, and if they do something to break it, they will work hard to earn it back. And when you feel like nobody else on earth could understand you, they will. Because they know you, sometimes even better than you know yourself.

These are the girls you want to seek out and build lasting friendships with. Remember to always be a friend to everyone, but don’t let yourself be dragged or torn down by girls who don’t value your friendship. Sometimes you have to make the truly difficult decision of distancing yourself from certain girls. You can still be their friend, but you just don’t spend as much time with them. It can be the hardest thing you’ve ever done. But sometimes it’s the best thing you can do for yourself. If you find yourself in a friendship that isn’t the best place for you to be, but you don’t know what to do, talk to your mom or another trusted adult in your life and ask them for their help. Don’t go at it alone if you don’t have to. We’re always stronger in numbers.

Here’s a short poem about true friendship.

We breathe life into each other and fill the days with sunshine.
We laugh until we cry and then wipe away each other’s tears.
We are the family that we choose and we will stick by your side through both the thick and thin.
You can always count on us to be there, especially when you need us most. Even when you can’t see us, know that we are there for you; to catch you when you fall, to help you rise up again, and to push you along your way.
Always remember that you are never alone, no matter how lonely or lost you feel.
And always know that we love you; in a way that only a true friend can understand. We will keep you in our heart forever and always; right where you belong.
